She Kept Saying “Someday.” Until She Realized How Much Time Had Passed.

She hadn’t given up on the things she wanted. She’d simply gotten so good at postponing them that years slipped by.

Michelle found the notebook while looking for a tax document.

It was tucked inside a cardboard box beneath old photographs, birthday cards, and a collection of things she’d once thought worth keeping.

Across the cover, in her own handwriting, were three words:

Places I’ll Go.

She opened it.

Italy. Portugal. The little coastal towns she’d wanted to explore. A train journey through the mountains. A weekend somewhere she’d never been.

On one page, she’d written:

Before I turn thirty-five.

Michelle was forty-seven.

She sat on the edge of her desk, staring at the words.

She could remember exactly how excited she’d been when she made that list.

What she couldn’t remember was when she’d stopped making plans to do any of it.

There Was Always a Good Reason

Michelle hadn’t wasted the years.

She’d built a career, raised two children, helped her parents through difficult seasons, and made a home her family loved.

There had always been good reasons to wait.

When the children were younger, travel seemed too complicated.

When work became demanding, there wasn’t enough time.

When money was tight, other things came first.

And whenever life finally settled down, something new appeared.

She’d never officially abandoned her dreams.

She’d just kept moving them to a future that never seemed to arrive.

Next summer.

When things calm down.

Someday.

That evening, Michelle placed the notebook on her nightstand.

For the first time, the word someday made her sad.

The Conversation That Changed Something

A few days later, Michelle met her friend Anna for a walk.

She told her about the notebook.

“I can’t believe how much time has passed,” Michelle said. “I always thought I’d get around to those things.”

Anna listened.

Then she asked, “Do you still want to go?”

Michelle looked at her.

“Of course.”

“Then why are you talking about it like the opportunity is already gone?”

Michelle didn’t answer.

She’d been so focused on the years she’d lost that she hadn’t considered the years still ahead.

Her dreams didn’t have to look exactly as they’d looked at thirty.

Some might no longer fit her life.

But others still mattered.

And perhaps those deserved more than another promise to herself.

She Finally Put a Date on It

That Saturday, Michelle opened her laptop.

She didn’t book a three-week European vacation.

She looked for a place two hours from home.

A little coastal town she’d always wanted to visit, with a lighthouse, secondhand bookstores, and a small waterfront hotel.

She checked the calendar.

Found a weekend.

Talked it over with her husband.

And made the reservation.

It wasn’t Italy.

It wasn’t the grand adventure she’d imagined years ago.

But it was real.

For the first time in a long while, something she’d wanted was no longer floating somewhere in the future.

It had a date.

The Beginning She Almost Missed

Three weeks later, Michelle stood beside the ocean.

The morning air was cool. Seagulls circled above the water, and the lighthouse she’d seen in photographs rose beyond the dunes.

She took a picture.

Then another.

Finally, she put her phone away.

For a few minutes, she simply stood there, taking it in.

She thought about the notebook waiting at home.

There were still places she might never visit. Plans that might change. Dreams that no longer belonged to the woman she’d become.

But there were also things she could begin.

Michelle smiled.

She hadn’t traveled back in time.

She’d done something better.

She’d finally started.

The Thought Worth Keeping

Michelle couldn’t recover the years that had passed.

But she could stop treating every year ahead as though it were already spoken for.

The saddest thing about “someday” isn’t how long you’ve waited. It’s forgetting that you’re still allowed to begin.
